How to Humanely Keep Your Wildlife Out of Your Yard

Most of us want to keep wildlife away from our property, but inevitably critters are going to make their way into our yards and homes. Your first instinct may be to remove these animals at all costs, but we’re here to petition you to consider humane animal removal. As someone who has practiced humane snake and other animal removals in Maryland for years, we wanted to take some time today to talk about the importance of humane animal removal and how you can keep wildlife out of your Maryland yard.

Helps Protect Our Ecosystems

Every animal, no matter how perceivably small, plays an important role in the ecosystem. Life feeds off of life, and calories and nutrients travel up the food chain. You may think you’re helping the ecosystem out by getting rid of a “useless” snake, but snakes help keep rodent populations under control and serve as food themselves for larger predators such as eagles or foxes.

Build a Fence

Any kind of fence will help to dissuade wildlife from entering your yard, though some critters will be able to either slip through or dig under. There are a couple of ways to prevent this. You could build a fence with tiny or no spaces in it, and you can bury your fence partially in the ground. Another option is to add an electric deterrence system to your fence. Setting the voltage too high can hurt or even kill an animal, but if you keep the voltage low, it will just apply a small shock that will startle the animals.

Use Bitter Bait

Animals will make their way onto your property in search of food, so sitting out bait may seem like a bad idea if you wanna keep them away. Using regular bait will attract even more animals, but putting bitter flavoring in your bait, or buying bitter bait, will turn any scavengers away. Once they’ve got that nasty taste in their mouth, they’ll be sure to steer clear of your property.
